Movies:
Any type is great if it has an engaging story.
I'm interested in the hero’s journey (the character wants something and comes against obstacles to get it), social issues, and characters who would be very unlikely to become friends or lovers in real life, yet they eventually do in the film. I like plots that show people discovering something on themselves that either comes as a surprise, or they were in denial about.
Books:
